Roche Lake is one of our favorite hiking lakes, but avoid prime times.
Driving Directions:
- Drive down Highway 5 south. Just past Shumway Lake is a left turn onto the Roche Lake Road.
- Follow the gravel road to the end, ignoring other turns. The road goes through the main campground of the Provincial Park.
Boat Launch
- There is a dedicated boat launch at the Campsite area, and there are some informal hand-launch spots before that.
- There is also a launch area at the Roche West campsite.
- Boat launches can be busy at prime times.
Shoreline
- Although we can paddle the whole lake (10 km), I prefer to paddle the north end of the lake from the North Campground and the south end of the lake from the West Campground.
- There are a number of shallow, marshy bays to explore. Some of these become a bit grown-in with aquatic plants later in the summer.
- The area around the Resort is a busy spot and we usually paddle away from the area.
- Most of the shoreline is forested.
- There are some prominent submerged rocks to watch out for.
- Lots of birds, pond life, and diversity on the lake.
- A well-managed Provincial Park.
- Some of the hiking trails and smaller lakes are worth investigating.
Cons
- A popular fishing lake. Avoid prime times.
