Tunkwa Lake offers lots of recreational opportunities, including paddling at Tunkwa or at Leighton Lake.

Directions:

  • Drive southwest to Logan Lake (Highway 97D or the Meadow Creek Road).
  • Continue through Logan Lake to the intersection of the Mamit Lake Road and the Tunkwa Lake Road.
  • Follow the Tunkwa Lake Road to Tunkwa Provincial Park.

Boat Launches:

  • The main boat launch and parking area is at the campground.    Follow the signage to the spot.
  • A good hand launch is also at the day use area.    Watch for the signage.    I prefer this spot since there are less power boats launching and landing.
  • There is also a good launch at Leighton Lake (follow the signage)

Paddling the Lake:

  • This is a busy lake with many fishing boats so launch and paddle at non-prime times.
  • There are a number of shallow bays amd marshy areas to explore.
  • The lake is surrounded by open grazing lands with a few homes and campsites.
  • Tunkwa is a dammed lake and the water is not very deep.
  • A paddle around the lake is about 7.5 km.

Pros:

  • A scenic spot and good access.
  • Lots of birds in the bays and around the lake.
  • A nice paddle at non-prime times.

Cons:

  • A later start to the season.
  • An open spot that can be windy.
  • A busy lake at prime times.
