White Lake is in a scenic valley, in the hills above Shuswap Lake, situated between Bastion Mountain and Blind Bay.

Driving Directions/Access/Boat Launch :

Drive east on Highway 1 past Sorrento, then at Balmoral, turn onto the Blind Bay Road, then immediately turn right onto the White Lake Road.        Follow it to the lake.    Alternately, continue on Highway 1 and turn at the White Lake Road turn-off at Carlin.

There are several launch spots on the lake.     The first is a hand launch at White Lake Community Park, across from the Fire Station.   Most paddlers will want to launch and park at White Lake Provincial Park, farther along the White Lake Forest Service Road (gravel).

I have also launched from spots farther along the road at the far end of the park.

The Lake:

White Lake has marl shoals along 3 shorelines (west, east, and south).    The lake water is clear and appealing.    There are marshy areas on the east end of the lake.     Paddling around the whole lake is about 12 km so I usually alternate, paddling the east end one year and the west end in the next year.

Pros:

  • This is an early ice-off lake, usually by the end of March.
  • The lake has beautiful clear water and it is a scenic spot to visit.
  • The lake is often quiet at non-prime times.
  • Even when the lake is busy, it is a big enough lake to find a shoreline to paddle away from everyone else.

Cons:

  • This is a popular fishing lake so it can be busy at prime times.
  • The Provincial Park site is fairly small so launch and parking access can be more challenging at busy times.
  • The lake is big enough to make paddling on a windy day less enjoyable.
